More about Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Ziwa Rhino SanctuaryZiwa Rhino Sanctuary was established in 2005 spreading over 70 square kilometers of land located in Mukerenege Village in the Kafu river basin in Nakasongora district in north western Uganda. The major purpose for the establishment of Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary was to protect the endangered white rhinos which had been reintroduced in the country after decades of nonexistence.

The ranch is managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority together with Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch Limited. These two bodies have worked hand in hand to see the population of the critically endangered Rhinos rise to 40 individuals as of June 2024. In addition to the rhinos, Ziwa shelters other primates such as colobus monkeys and baboons.

Rhino tracking experience

Rhino tracking is the main travel activity that attracts many travelers to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. A trek to see these critically endangered primates is reviewed as magical and lifetime. According to one client, ziwa is a completely fantastic place to see rhinos in large numbers.

When you stay you do a morning rhino walk and often the rhinos are close to the central accommodation area so you walk 100m and can see large numbers of rhinos. Very special to see them in large numbers interacting socially. I’d also highly recommend the night walking safari which is a very special experience. The shoebill trek is just a birding walk so if you’re not a birder, it’s less likely to be your thing.

Fairly decent accommodation and food which they were in the middle of renovating their facilities.
