The rain forest park is home to over 200 mountain gorillas habituated into 8 families. Each permit to trek gorillas in Congo costs $450 which make Congo the best destination for budget travelers. Apparently, Virunga National Park is closed for tourism due to security threats recorded in the park. Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Pick up & transfer to Goma
Our company representative (your safari driver guide) will meet you at Kigali international airport and transfer to Gisenyi. Relax and chill a little on lake Kivu and thereafter cross over to Goma for an overnight stay at Mikeno Lodge/ Bukavu Tented Camp
Day 2: Gorilla trekking
Today you wake up early, have breakfast and with your packed lunch transfer to Virunga park headquarters for registration and briefing about the rules and regulations of gorilla trekking. At 8:00am, start off the hike to meet the endangered mountain gorillas, enjoy their human like behaviors, learn their social lives and have fun with them. Gorilla trekking time may take as less as 30 minutes to several hours depending on the location of gorillas that day. Dinner and overnight at Mikeno Lodge/ Bukavu Tented Camp
Day 3: Nyiragongo Hiking
Wake up early, have breakfast, get your packed lunch and transfer to Kibatsi village for a briefing on safety and guidelines of Nyiragongo Hiking. Thereafter, transfers to the starting point of Nyiragongo hiking and at 10:00am, start off the hike. Climbing is strenuous but the experience you get after reaching the summit is worth the effort. Ensure to be physically fit and carry enough drinking water and energy giving snacks. Overnight stay at Nyiragongo Bandas.
Day 4: Descend and departure
In the early morning, wakeup to have a cup of coffee, hike down to the base of the volcano where you will fin your diver guide waiting for you. Drive to Kigali for your connecting flight.
