Yes, you can trek gorillas during the rainy season. Whereas mountain gorilla trekking is best done during the dry season between June to September and December to February, the endangered mountain gorillas can also be seen during the rainy season, which is between March through May and September through November. Mountain gorillas live in rainy forests which at times receive rainfall throughout the year.

UWA Introduces Giraffes at Ziwa Rhino Sanactuary

Virunga Mountains

Also known as the “Mufumbira Ranges”, the Virunga Mountains/Volcanoes are among the top attractions, a common interest for travelers to the Virunga Conservation Area. The Virunga Volcanoes is a chain of eight volcanoes shared among the three gorilla parks in the Virunga Massif. These parks are Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, and Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Virunga Volcanoes are part of the Albertine Rift Valley located between Lake Edward and Lake Kivu. Six of the eight Volcanoes are dormant while two (Nyiragongo and Nyamuragira) are active. In all gorilla trekking Parks, a group of trackers have been trained about gorilla conservation and tourism. At the end of each day, trackers follow up on the gorilla families to confirm where each gorilla family is going to spend a night. At the start of each trekking day, trackers hike up into the jungle o confirm the exact location of each gorilla family.

They then notify the rangers and travelers on the exact location of each gorilla family. They use tracking devices to tell exactly where the gorillas are and which route to follow to avoid going off-track in the forest. Having known the actual location of the gorillas is a guarantee for travelers to see the gorillas at the end of the trek

Gorilla Family allocation

At the start of each gorilla trekking day, park rangers allocate different gorilla families to each group of eight travelers. The gorilla family allocation is categorized as hard, medium and easy trek depending on the traveler’s physical fitness and hiking abilities. The physically fit, young and energetic travelers are allocated hard to trek gorilla families which are normally far while the elderly, physically unfit are given easy and medium to trek gorilla families. Travelers are reminded to always disclose about their physical abilities to the tour operators arranging their gorilla safari packages. Disclosing your hiking abilities and physical fitness enable the tour operators to plan for you a head of time and secure for you an easy to trek gorilla family.

Pian Upe Game Reserve

Located in north eastern Uganda in the Karamoja region within the Mount Elgon Conservation Area Pian Upe Wildlife reserve is Uganda’s hidden gem worth exploring on your Uganda safaris. Pian Upe spreads over 2,788 square kilometers and it’s the second largest protected area in Uganda after Murchison falls National Park. The reserve was established in 1962 to promote wildlife conservation and diversify tourism products in the Pearl of Africa. Pian Upe wildlife reserve is located between Mount Elgon and Kidepo Valley National parks and it’s bordered by Bokoro and Matheneko game reserves.

Once you get to the park headquarters, you are handed over into the hands of the rangers from the Ugandan Wildlife Authority. Tips for Gorilla Tours in Africa

Get as fit as you can before the trip, but don’t feel that you must be a super athlete. You will be assigned to a gorilla family group based on their location and your age/fitness level. Some treks are easy or moderate. Just know that some treks turn out, as mind did, to be more difficult than originally estimated.
Notify your driver/guide of any health or fitness issues the night before your trek. He/she may have some influence about which level of difficulty you are assigned to.
Hire a porter. You need a porter to assist you carry the camera equipment, rain jacket, water, etc. Porters also help to support by grabbing your hands in case of slippery grounds.
Speaking of water, take more than you think you will need, in case your trek is longer than expected (and if you hire a porter, you don’t even have to carry it).

I know it seems odd; just practice in your own bathroom or shower a time or two, but they really work!
Also, practice with your camera, and recognize that you may or may not need a long zoom. A wide focus area may cause your camera to focus on the vegetation in the foreground, and your gorillas will be blurry.
